Final of the Knowledge of Management and Economics Competition 3rd Edition
The final of the Knowledge of Management and Economics Competition, organised on the initiative of the staff from the Department of Management and Economics at the Faculty of Management and Quality Science at Gdynia Maritime University, took place on 29 November 2024. Held under the honorary patronage of HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, and the Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek to promote learning, entrepreneurship, and develop interests in management and economy, the competition attracted pupils from several regions of Poland.
The competition was the idea of Dr Anetta Waśniewska, a member of staff in the Department of Management and Economics. A major contribution to the success of the competition was made by Dr Monika Szyda, who was involved in every stage of its organisation. Work on the competition was coordinated by Dr Joanna Kizielewicz, the Head of the Department of Management and Economics. Also involved in organising the final was Dr Tomasz Winnicki, who was in charge of logistics.
A total of 303 pupils from 38 different middle schools located in five different regions of the country applied to this year’s event. 266 pupils then completed the first stage - an online test on 15 November. 59 of the 66 pupils who qualified took part in the final, demonstrating impressive knowledge and passion for economic sciences.
Following the competition, participants attended a lecture given by Dr Agnieszka Hajduk from the Department of Management and Economics, entitled: “Rationality in Science - How to Manage Your Wallet”, which explored the practical aspects of managing personal finances.
The final took place in the University’s main T. Meissner auditorium. The event was led by Dr Joanna Kizielewicz, who welcomed the guests, including university authorities, sponsors, academic teaching staff, tutors, parents, and the contestants - middle school pupils. Professor Kizielewicz presented the aims of the competition and the statistics concerning this year’s edition and thanked all those involved in the organisation of the event.
The most exciting part of the event was the announcement of the results, conducted by Dr Monika Szyda. The winner of the main prize, an Asus laptop, funded by HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, was Sebastian Grabowski from the University Middle School in Toruń. The award was presented on the Rector's behalf by the Deputy Rector for Science, Dr Dariusz Barbucha. The second prize, a Ferrari lego set, funded by Daniel Kędzierski, the CEO of FastTony, part of marketing agency Ma&Ma, was awarded to Jakub Zalewski from the University Middle School in Toruń. The third- place prize, a Samsung Galaxy tablet, went to Hurbert Szewczyk, from the Food and Agriculture School in Lębork. The prize was funded by the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Quality Science, Dr Marzenna Popek. The fourth-place prize was funded by Magdalena Skrzypczak of Libri Accounting and Rafał Żynda Construction and was presented to Aleksander Tyburski from the Food and Agriculture School in Lębork. The awards for fifth and sixth places in the competition were funded by the GMU Promotions Office. Fifth place went to Bartosz Henning from the Janusz Pasierb Economic School in Tczew, and awarded 6th place was Hanna Łożyńska from the 1st General Education Middle School in Olsztyn.
The organisational committee would like to congratulate the winners and all those who took part in the competition and wish them further success and all the best in developing their knowledge and passion for economics and management. The generosity of the sponsors made the Management and Economics Competition an exceptional event, through which the organisers demonstrated that the promotion of learning and entrepreneurship among young people has a real influence on their future. The competition, which attracts pupils from all around Poland, is currently one of the most important education events in management and economy in Pomerania.
