GMU Staff Take Part in Seminar on Improving Research Publications in Management and Quality Science
On 2-3 December 2024, a prestigious academic seminar, entitled “How to conduct original and high-impact research? What constitutes quality research?", took place at the Faculty of Management and Quality Science of Gdynia Maritime University as part of the “PROGRESS - Development of Scientific Research at Gdynia Maritime University in Management and Quality Science” project, financed by the Ministry of Science under the “Regional Excellence Initiative” led by GMU Associate Professor Dr Joanna Kizielewicz. The event is also supported by Dr Katarzyna Skrzeszewska of the Department of Management and Economics.
The event aimed to familiarise research and teaching staff and doctoral candidates at the GMU Doctoral School with good and bad publication practices concerning journals in management and quality science. Participants were also introduced to key rules in the selection of journals suitable for the publication of the scientific research conducted.
Taking part in the seminar were 15 individuals, including staff from the Faculty of Management and Quality Science and Doctoral Candidates, allowing for a more friendly setting that favoured the interactive exchange of experiences.
The seminar was led by Professor Marianna Sigala from the University of Newcastle in Australia (https://www.newcastle.edu.au/profile/marianna-sigala), an outstanding expert, highly recognised on the national stage. Professor Sigala is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Management and co-editor of the Journal of Service Theory & Practice. She is an authority the areas of management and marketing and the tourism industry. Her experience and knowledge proved to be invaluable to the seminar participants. During the meeting, Professor Sigala discussed in detail the publication process, the expectations of the prestigious scientific journals, as well as strategies for improving the impact and quality of scientific publications.
The event was an important step in the development of the competencies of the academic staff and doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Management and Quality Science. The participants gained valuable knowledge required to better understand editorial requirements and in the effective choice of scientific journals, which in the long term may contribute to the increase of publications in highly scored journals.
The seminar with Professor Sigala was the first such event as part of the PROGRESS project. Future seminars planned for the coming years will further strengthen the scientific development of Gdynia Maritime University in management and quality science.
The initiative is consistent with GMU’s strategic goals, supporting academic excellence and furthering the University’s prestige both in Poland and abroad. Through the development of publishing skills and the deepening of knowledge of editorial processes, the Faculty of Management and Quality Science is strengthening its position as a centre of innovative research and education at the highest level.
The event met with a positive reception from participants who appreciated both the merits of the content presented and the chance to directly interact with an outstanding expert. In summarising the event, Professor Sigala underlined the role of international cooperation and the importance of creating high-quality scientific publications to strengthen the position of the University in global academia.
